Characteristics Old German Style Roofing (Altdeutsche Deckung)

With the Altdeutsche Deckung the slates are laid to rising courses either from left to right or from right to left. The slates must be sorted on site by length, beginning with the largest pieces at the eaves, and are laid to courses which diminish from eaves to ridge.

Minimum pitch of roof: 25°.

The slates for the Altdeutsche Deckung can be cut blunt-edged, normally edged or sharp-edged.

The slates must be sorted on site by length, beginning with the largest pieces at the eaves, and are laid to courses which diminish from eaves to ridge.

The characteristic of the Altdeutsche Doppeldeckung is that the tail of slates in one course overlaps the head of slates in the course next but one below by at least by 2 cm.

Minimum pitch of roof: 22°.

The slates for the Altdeutsche Doppeldeckung can be cut blunt-edged or normally edged.

Formats (assortment)

The shape of the slates is similar to the shape of the old German style slate with normally cut edge. The characteristic of the scale roofing is the use of slates identical in length and width.

Rectangular Roofing, British Style (Rechteckdoppeldeckung)

Characteristics Rectangular Roofing, British Style (Rechteckdoppeldeckung)

With the Rechteckdoppeldeckung (British style) rectangular or square slates are laid with joint between adjacent slates to alternate courses halfdislocated, running parallel to the eaves. According to the building rules of the Deutsches Dachdeckerhandwerk the tail of the third course slate has to overlap the head of the first course slate. The slates can be cut full-edged, with clipped corners (octogones), with arches (coquettes), segment curves, gothic curves, point and similar variations. Furthermore, different widths and lengths can be used for this kind of roofing.

Minimum pitch of roof: 22°.

Random Roofing (Wilde Deckung)

Characteristics Random Roofing (Wilde Deckung)

With the random roofing slates in random shape and size are laid to courses at random without any apparent plan. The “raw” slates are cut on site according to the required form. In spite of this or just because of this the required rules regarding overlappping have to be observed. This kind of roofing requires the skill of an experienced slater and much time.
