With the Altdeutsche Deckung the slates are laid to horizontal courses either from left to right or from right to left. The characteristic of this kind of cladding is the use of slates in different lengths and widths. The slates are sorted on site by length, beginning with the largest pieces at the bottom and clearly diminishing in size upwards.

The slates for the Altdeutsche Deckung can be cut blunt-edged, normally edged or sharp-edged.

Scale Cladding (Schuppendeckung)

With the Schuppendeckung the slates are laid to horizontal courses from left to right or from right to left. The shape of the slate is similar to that of the old German style slate with normally cut edge. The characteristic of the scale cladding is the use of slates which are identical in length and width.

With the Bogenschnittdeckung the slates are laid to horizontal courses from left to right or from right to left. The shape of the slates is square with one corner rounded off. The slates are identical in length and width.

Spaced Cladding (Gezogene Deckung)

With the Gezogene Deckung rectangular or square slates are laid to horizontal courses with spaces between adjacent slates, overlapping in length and width. According to the regulations of the Deutsches Dachdeckhandwerk the tail of the third course slate has to overlap the head of the first course slate.The characteristic of this kind of cladding is the overlapping in width by at least 40 mm. Thus there is no joint but a gap between the adjacent slates.

The slates can be cut full-edged or with clipped corners (octogones).

The slates can be either rectangular or square. They can be cut full-edged or with clipped corners.
